Gov. Bob Taft announced Tuesday that Gene T. Harris of Columbus was appointed to the Ohio University Board of Trustees for a term ending May 13, 2013.
She will replace Patricia A. Ackerman, from Bedford Heights, whose term expired. Harris, the superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, was one of 10 candidates for the position, said Orest Holubec, spokesman for the governor's office.
Governor Taft believes that (Harris) has the background to take a real leadership role on the Board of Trustees
Holubec said. The governor also believes she has a unique background in education. She'll be able to help keep a strong connection between those who train teachers and the Board of Trustees that oversees them.
Harris graduated from Linden-McKinley High School in 1971 and began teaching in Columbus Public Schools in 1975. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from OU.
Before becoming superintendent in 2001, Harris was assistant superintendent for Public Instruction and chief program officer for the Ohio Department of Education. After returning to Columbus Public Schools in 1998, she became deputy superintendent in 2000.
Harris was unavailable for comment at press time. 17
