Football team tests plays in scrimmage

With only two weeks remaining before the season opener against Virginia Military Institute, the Ohio football team held its first scrimmage under the lights Saturday. During the 90-minute session, the Bobcats ran about 80 plays and focused on aspects of a normal regulation game.

The workout, which was a simulated game, pitted the first team against the second team. Personnel and schemes were the primary reasons for holding the scrimmage.

I was pleased with the way things went tonight

coach Brian Knorr said in a press release. The players we anticipate making big plays during the season made them in this scrimmage.

Knorr specifically referenced an interception by safety Rob Stover, who forced the lone turnover with an interception inside the 10. Scott Mayle performed well at receiver and on special teams, while quarterback Ryan Hawk made several big plays while operating the new base offense. The scrimmage marked the one-week point of Ohio's first full week of practice.

We had a good first week Knorr said. Like every team we are a little beat up already with some sprains and strains. Our kids are in great shape

though

and we look forward to putting in the VMI game plan next week.

Peden Stadium's 75th anniversary season kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 when the Bobcats will play host to VMI under the lights. Ohio's first Mid-American Conference game is Sept. 18 at rival Miami, while the first home contest with a conference opponent is Sept. 25 against Buffalo.

Early homestand highlights men's basketball schedule

Some of college basketball's most storied programs will visit The Convo during the 2004-05 season. San Francisco (Nov. 28), Butler (Dec. 2) and Navy (Dec. 4) are part of a three-game homestand to open up the season for the Bobcats.

Later in the season, the Bobcats play host to East Division rivals Marshall, Miami and Kent State and West Division front-runners Western Michigan and Bowling Green.

A pair of road games will follow, when the Bobcats travel to St. Francis (Pa.) and American a week later. The pre-Christmas slate concludes on Dec. 18 with a home game against Duquesne.

For the second time in four seasons, the Bobcats will take part in the Florida International Holiday Classic, squaring off with Colgate, Binghamton and the host Golden Panthers Dec. 27-28.

A second straight appearance in the ESPN Bracket Buster Saturday event, Sunday, Feb. 19, is the team's final non-conference game.

Two straight road games at Akron Jan. 2 and Ball State Jan. 5 will open up Mid-American Conference play for the Bobcats. Home games of interest include Marshall Jan. 9, Kent State Jan. 15 and Miami Feb. 12. Bowling Green travels to Athens on Jan. 29, while defending conference champion Western Michigan visits The Convo one week later.
