The NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee appointed Ohio linebacker Spencer Tatum, the organization announced recently. Tatum, a sophomore who sat out most of last year with a hip injury, begins a two-year term Sept. 1 to represent all athletes who participate in the MAC.
Chosen over his peers from other MAC schools, he is one of only 31 members on the committee, one from each of the Division I leagues
Created as part of the NCAA governance structure, SAAC was put into place to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and developing a positive student-athlete image. Members of this committee are engaged in pertinent issues involving collegiate athletic, including Native American mascots and logos, pregnancy of student-athletes and their eligibility, and NCAA transfer rules.
Volleyball preseason preparations under way
The Ohio volleyball team departed Wednesday for its annual preseason retreat to Lake Hope State Park. After their time at Lake Hope, which runs through Saturday, the team will hold its first official practice 7 p.m. Saturday.
Expectations are high for the Bobcats, coming off a 28-5 season in which they won the Mid-American Conference championship for the first time; the squad also had its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For the second year in a row, the Bobcats are preseason favorite in the MAC.
The Bobcats are also garnering some national attention. In the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 coaches poll released Monday, the squad received 20 votes. The preseason ranking marks 12 straight weeks that Ohio has had votes in the poll. The NCAA RPI Poll listed Ohio 26th heading into the 2004 season.
The squad loses two-time MAC Player of the Year Laura Hageman to graduation but returns seven players who received significant playing time in the 2003 campaign.
Among those players are setter Briana Adamovsky, who was named to the MAC First Team and NCAA Mideast Region Honorable Mention as a junior. Second-Team MAC selection outside hitter Holly Schetzsle and defensive specialist Michaele Blackburn also return. In her freshman year, Blackburn set a school record for digs by a freshman.
The Bobcats have their first match at 7p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, when they host Virginia Tech in The Convo.
Promotions announced in athletics department
Derek Scott, Luke Sayers and Dan Lowe have all received promotions, according to a press release.
Scott, who previously held the position of director of broadcasting and media relations, has been promoted to assistant athletics director for external affairs.
Scott, who is best known as being the Voice of the Bobcats
will continue that role along with his additional responsibilities. These include oversight of all external operations for 20 varsity sports programs. He replaces Mark Wilson, who left OU to become the athletic director at Tennessee Tech.
Sayers, who was promoted to marketing director, is an Athens native who spent the past three years as Ohio's marketing coordinator. He is in charge of all advertising campaigns that serve to promote the numerous Bobcat athletics teams.
Lowe, who is from Canton, previously worked as a marketing intern. His role will be to coordinate all promotional activities that take place during the course of home athletic events. 17
