Bobcats prove potential at home meet

The Ohio men's and women's cross country teams continued to improve their seasons with another strong showing at the Ohio Invitational. The men's team finished first, while the women finished second.

Pacing the team for the men was senior Jason Linton who finished first with a time of 25:43 in the 8,000-meter (5-mile) race. For the women, sophomore Andrea Maas took third in the 5,000 meters (3.1 miles), clocking in at 19:10.

It was good to see Linton and Maas back in it and running well

coach Clay Calkins said. It's always great to win at home.

Linton said he was pleased to win the meet after having a rough race last week.

This was my first win in cross country because there is usually more competition Linton said. This wasn't that bad though.

The other schools were Concord, Alderson-Broaddus, Robert Morris, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and West Virginia Wesleyan. The lack of tougher competition didn't effect the runners said Calkins.

It might not have been the highest competition level

but at the same time everyone ran well and it's a good booster for us going into next week's meet

Calkins said.

The men's race was almost swept by Ohio, with Bobcats taking five of the top seven finishes. The women's team was bumped by IPFW, but still had several high finishes.

The team rested five runners including Austin Schiele, Drew Frum, Toni Turowski, Lauren Birnie and Carime Reinhart. These runners, and other top runners will compete at Friday's Notre Dame Invitational -the first major meet of many in October. Other meets will be the All-Ohio and Mid-American Conference championships and Pre-Nationals.

The team is moving in the right direction -both men's and women's

Calkins said. They are all doing a fine job and we will just keep on keepin' on. We hope to go in and win the Gold Division at Notre Dame.
