The fall sequence of Star Walks, hosted by the Ohio University astronomy faculty, is scheduled to have its first hike Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Astronomy majors, minors, or anyone interested are invited to join professor Markus Boettcher at the Ridges in Athens to participate in star gazing.
We've been doing the Star Walks for about a decade now and we usually just trail up the hill
ponder the cosmos and head back to the Ridges said Brian McNamara, professor of physics and astronomy.
Highlights for the evening include the summer triangle, a group of bright, prominent evening stars; the Milky Way galaxy; and the Andromeda galaxy, which is more than two million light years away.
The group will depart from the Kennedy Museum of American Art, located at Lin Hall at the Ridges, and the walk will last about two hours.
Those going on the walk should bring flashlights and warm clothing because it tends to get significantly colder as the night continues McNamara said. Binoculars are also good to have.
