The Ohio men's cross country team continued to improve this season by taking third place --including an individual first place finish --at the Mel Brodt Invitational Saturday.
Austin Schiele finished first in the Division I, with a time of 25:31 at the team's first 8,000-meter (5-mile) event of the season.
It was a surprise
Schiele said. I was expecting there to be more guys up there.
Ohio's other top five runners were Craig Leon (11th place), Toni Turowski (16th), Brian List (22nd), and Brian King (23rd).
The team's third-place finish was an improvement upon last year's rank of fourth and it bodes well for them, said coach Clay Calkins.
This finish was a definite improvement and I feel the team is moving in the right direction Calkins said.
The meet, which was held at Bowling Green, was won again by last year's winner, Cincinnati. The only team other than Ohio from the Mid-American Conference was host Bowling Green; however, the meet still exposed Ohio's potential, Calkins said.
Schiele also said that the team would rely on its hard work this summer to bring success.
We didn't want to psyche ourselves out
he said. We just wanted to go there relaxed and confident
and know that our training would carry us through this season.
Even without runners Drew Frum and Jason Linton, Craig Leon said he was pleased with the team's performance.
Next up for Ohio will be the Malone Invitational in Canton, Ohio. The Bobcats will race at 5 p.m. Friday.
