Dormancy leads to confusion

Ohio University Faculty Senate members debated the complexity of the General Education program, which is slated to replace the current Tier education program in August 2006.

Members argued last night, stating the new education program's prolonged dormancy caused many to forget what the initial problems were with the Tier program and why the new program was chosen to replace it.

What is the problem we are trying to solve? said Engineering Senator Daniel Gulino. All I remember is there was a problem with Tier III

and it was decided that the whole program be replaced.

Senators said their constituents were complaining that the General Education program is too complicated and are concerned it would be difficult to explain to parents.

The complexity of the program requires a great deal of cooperation English Senator Ken Daley said. If there are groups who are opposed or uninterested that is a serious problem.

Currently, the General Education program is relying on a web-based implementation process, requiring all faculty members to submit a proposal of classes they wish to exist in the new program. Senators said there was not much time for such a process, especially with deadlines approaching in the next month.

Some argued it was not the faculty's job to choose which courses should transfer to the new program and that a task force should handle such responsibilities.

What it looks like everyone wants is a project manager someone in an administrative position to make sure things get done

said Faculty Senate Chair Phyllis Bernt.

Bernt continued to say that an official proposal for such a manager would be drawn and discussed in the future.
