The tradition of the Onefest -binge on warm beer, scorching sun and even hotter music -is leaking into the autumn season with the first annual Fallfest.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, buses set to transport concert-goers will make stops at Peden Stadium, Morton Hall and Bob's Foodland every 15 to 20 minutes. The buses will take them to Ervin's Big Red Barn and Field, located off Stage Coach Road, for 12 hours of live music.
The festival opens at noon with Three Sided Soul, followed by Crackers and Jam and Jimson Lo_Fi. The party ends at midnight with recently signed hip hop band, Ordinary Peoples, who performed last year at Onefest. DJ LaRich will be the MC for the entire event, ...bringing a flavor of spring break in October.
Unlike this past spring's Onefest, which was put on by F.A.M. Productions, LLC, Fallfest is organized by Astro Productions, LTD, and says it is a completely different event from that of Onefest, now called Springfest. Judy Palmer of Astro Productions said the company has hired sheriffs and a security team to oversee the festival. They will make sure no one under the age of 18 is given entrance into the concert and marking those under the age of 21.
We want to ensure a safe event and avoid any type of violence that could occur
Palmer said. We are really trying to make sure there is absolutely no drunk driving.
Ordinary Peoples' MC, Scraps, said they expect to continue the tradition of getting Athens on their feet and moving.
Every other city we go to we compare it to Athens Scraps said. This is our favorite place to play because we know everyone there is ready to have a good time.
With their performance, Scraps wants to try to better their Onefest show. To promote a new album, Ordinary Peoples plan to play new material as well. Scraps said the band might have some surprises for the crowd.
I might make my keyboard player get naked
Scraps said.
Despite, the festival's statement of BYOB and 12 hours of seemingly lawless freedom, fights were non-existent at the original Onefest. Scraps said if any members of the crowd start a fight, the band will stop playing until it is properly handled.
The crowds have been great so far -knock on wood
Scraps said. Hopefully people will be responsible in some way
shape or form.
Jimson Lo_Fi said they are no strangers to music festivals. The band said they will pack hip hop, trip hop, reggae, funk and rock all into a sound they call irie.
We're hoping to get our music out to an extra 1
000 people who haven't heard us
said John O'Maley, lead singer and saxophonist.
Advanced tickets for Fallfest are available for $10 at the Blue Gator, Skippers and Athens Cab. The price also includes bus transportation. Tickets are available for purchase the day of the concert at Bob's Foodland, Morton Hall and Peden Stadium.
