President Roderick McDavis has made it no secret that he wants to clean up Ohio University's party image since OU placed fifth on The Princeton Review's list of top party schools. The birth of Fallfest this weekend, although not sponsored by the university, is an addition to the many large parties in Athens, and McDavis has concerns for the students.
My biggest concern is how students deal with civic responsibility
whether it be at Onefest Fallfest Palmerfest
Oakfest or Halloween. They have to be mindful of their own behavior
McDavis said.
I am concerned with the number of big social events occurring in Athens
whether they are sponsored by the university or the community because they will always target the students of OU. As an alum and certainly as president
I remain concerned that our students act appropriately as more and more of these major events come to Athens.
Concerning the question of whether he would ever consider stepping in to try to get rid of an event such as Fallfest, McDavis said it would not be a suitable move.
I certainly don't feel it's right or appropriate for the university to extend itself into the community. Our responsibility is to work closely with Student Senate and other student clubs and organizations to influence student behavior
McDavis noted. We in administrative positions must also be mindful of how we behave.
McDavis also said that at the moment it is hard to tell what course of action, if any, the university would take in regard to students reprimanded for their conduct at Fallfest.
It is difficult to state now what our posture would be relative to students going to the Judicial Affairs office for off-campus behavior.
