Registering to vote: A 5-minute civic duty

You must crawl before you can walk, and you must register before you can vote. That is why, little more than four weeks before America chooses its leader for the next four years, so many groups have been pushing so many pieces of paper at so many indifferent college students.

And I applaud them.

Four years ago, about 45 percent of college-aged voters were registered for the presidential election, but only 27 percent made it to the booths. Surely, this year, with party lines drawn so clearly before even Independence Day, more of our peers will make the trek to their local precincts. At least that's what everyone in this most Democratic of counties has been saying all quarter.

It is of no personal interest to me for whom you will cast your vote 32 days from now, nor should it interest you where my own political allegiances lie. I am, after all, the sports editor; what would I know about politics?

What does interest me, though, is that you vote. If you cannot drag yourself from slumber one day out of the year to cast your ballot and utilize your civil rights, than don't bother complaining about our leaders for the next four years.

Registering to vote takes five minutes. Do yourself a favor and go do it. Today.
