Rock the Mic
an open-stage performance by local talent, will be presented by University Program Council at 8 p.m. Saturday at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
I think it'll be a lot of fun we have some varied and interesting performers said Bruce Dalzell, who will host the event.
There will be many different types of musical acts, from individual performers to bands, playing at the event. The performers' genres range from jazz to acoustic rock to rap. There also will be several non-musical performances.
The School of Theatre is doing a preview of 'Hair'
concert co-chair Elyse Morelli said. We also have the Lost Flamingo Company; they're a sketch improv group.
Singer Meghan Watkins said she will be performing a variety of music at the event. Brian Turner will accompany her on piano.
I'm doing a gospel song
Watkins said, just some older songs and some jazzy stuff.
Guitarist and singer Adam Torres will be playing with guitarist Eric Vescelius and cellist John Stahly in a group he describes as a mix of jazz, folk and acoustic rock. Dalzell was an influence in getting the trio to play.
I've played at his open mic a number of times
Torres said.
UPC asked Dalzell to move his open mic night from Baker University Center's Front Room to Mem Aud for a Homecoming weekend event.
Dalzell's local fame and numerous contacts in the music scene made him the logical choice to host the event.
He's pretty well known for his open stage
Morelli said. He's a well-known local performer.
Dalzell will be introducing each act and performing at the beginning and end of the event.
Also performing are Liz Pahl, Mae Klingler, Charlie Hughes, Matt McClellan, Mike Hughes, Josh Pringle, Noah Feher, Angie Perley, Debbie Morrison, Chris Graham, Dale Green and Tristan Kinsley.
The event will be similar to the Front Room open mic, Dalzell said.
Rock the Mic should appeal to both students and alumni. It will give the audience a showcase of the local music scene.
My co-chair
Patrick [Jamieson]
and I wanted to do a concert
Morelli said. I think it would be something that would attract people.
Admission is free, but UPC will be collecting canned goods for the Athens Food Pantry as part of the annual Make a Difference Day.
I think it's an excellent place for people just to see what Athens music is all about
Stahly said.
I hope for a good turn out
