In the time the Snails have known one another, they could have conceived a child. Acoustic guitarist Chris Monday said he tricked his housemates into starting a band after they moved into a house together -leaving the question open to whether they actually might be expecting.
Within the nine months the Snails have played together, they have done 18.62 to 20 shows together. The band began as an acoustic set with Monday, Matt Presutti and Andrew Weiland. It then became a full ensemble following the addition of drummer Eric Blankenhorn.
After a series of s+
and when people come to our shows they feel this friendly soft feeling and when they leave
they're covered in slime
bassist Weiland said.
The band assures anyone who attends their shows that it will be a good slime -like Ecto-plasma Ghostbusters-type slime.
One problem the Snails have encountered is agreeing on how to describe their sound. Blankenhorn said he feels deep down they are a brontosaurus running into a forest ranger with a gun; Monday claims they sound like Jesus Jones; Weiland said they are a stripped-down full symphony; and Presutti said he thinks they sound like the Bee Gees.
The band said that while they have noticed a universal crowd at their shows, they have not quite found what they hope to be their core audience.
We were kinda hoping to appeal to volleyball players
Blankenhorn said.
As far as the future of the Snails, the band said it is hoping to start recording soon to get its happy music for the extremely depressed out to the masses. The band has roughly 25 songs in the works and has two producers interested in working with it.
In the winter months, the band is planning shows in Cincinnati and Bowling Green. By spring, Presutti said he hopes to have a week-long tour planned.
It all depends on whether or not we have an album; you can't really tour if you don't have anything to sell
Presutti said.
As for performing in Athens, the band will be appearing at 10 p.m. Sunday at The Union, 18 W. Union St., and again next Thursday at Casa Cantina, 4 W. State St.
For the Snails, making music is about never being complete. Music, to the Snails, makes life worth living, Monday said. Their only frustration with music is not having the time or money to dedicate everything to it.
I was looking for more sexual encounters as well
Blankenhorn joked.
