The Ohio men's swimming and diving team is looking for its first win of the season against Buffalo this weekend. The women's team will also be on the road at Buffalo and Akron.
Coach Greg Werner said the team's goal is to improve from meet to meet. He also said one area the team needs to improve is its technique approaching and coming off the walls.
We need better approaches into a turn or into a finish
coming out of the wall for a turn or into a wall for a finish he said. I think a little increased focus in that area can add up to big results.
The Ohio men (0-2 overall, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) lost to Buffalo in dual-meet action last year. Werner said the team would like for this year's results to be switched.
The Ohio women (3-1, 1-1 MAC) beat both Akron and Buffalo in dual meets last year.
Werner said some swimmers would compete in the same events as last weekend, while some will swim different events. He said he wants to see how swimmers adjust to the new events.
Ilse Petersen said she is not sure what to expect from her swims this weekend but is excited to compete again.
The Johannesburg, South Africa, native said she hopes to improve this weekend on an earlier season 1,000-yard freestyle swim.
The last time I swam it I went out too fast
so I have to pace myself better this weekend
she said.
Werner said all three meets will be tough and will take a total team effort to pull out wins.
We know we have to be ready
he said. We saw that last weekend
so it will take a complete team effort to come out with wins. We understand how important every point and every opportunity is.
The women's team swims Akron at 5 p.m. today at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium. The men and women will swim Buffalo at 1 p.m. Saturday at Alumni Arena in Buffalo.
