Thank goodness for basketball tip-offs

It's getting to be that time of the year again. The weather gets a bit cooler, the leaves fall off the trees and everyone is starting to make plans for the holidays. What is this time? It's the start of the best sport known to man, college basketball.

I know it's a bit early, but the NBA season will only hold us basketball fans over for so long. I can't wait for the Ohio men's basketball team's exhibition game Saturday in The Convo against St. Michael's.

Sure, it's preseason, but basketball is basketball. Plus, it's the first chance to catch a glimpse of the Bobcats' team without graduates Jaivon Harris, Thomas Stephens and Delvar Barrett.

I know as soon as people finish reading this column, they won't pay attention to the previous paragraph because they will be saying, Basketball isn't the best sport.

Most of you are probably thinking it doesn't get any better than college and professional football, but you've got another thing coming. If you haven't realized it by now, football is boring.

Sure, football is rough, tough and action packed, but that is only when the action isn't stopped for a huddle, time out, coach's challenge, two-minute warning, penalty flag, yardage measurement or when teams decide to waste a half-minute by letting the play clock run down to one.

Of an hour of football clock time, only about 30 minutes are spent playing football. And remember that only half the team -the defense or offense -is actually playing half of the time. So most players actually play football for approximately 15 minutes. Impressive. (I did no research, so I might be off by a few minutes, though I am a skilled guesstimater. (And, yes, I created the word guesstimater)). (How about that? A double parenthetical statement. Beat that, Cottrill.)

So as the college basketball season continues to draw nearer, I will be counting down the days. Will you?
