Zips steal game from Herd, tie for MAC East Division lead

In a game that went down to the wire, the Akron football team prevailed 31-28 against Marshall.

With the win, Akron is now 5-4 overall, but 5-1 in the Mid-American Conference, creating a three-way tie for the best record in the MAC East Division with Marshall and Miami.

Forging back in the second half with three touchdowns, the Zips overcame a 21-point deficit and scored 24 unanswered points.

We had a comedy of errors

Marshall coach Bob Pruett said. Whatever could go wrong did go wrong and in about a three-minute span too.

Zips quarterback Charlie Frye completed 28-of-45 passes, including 12-of-19 during the final quarter, for 322 total yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 37 yards including a 31-yard scramble for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Marshall has the No. 1 rushing defense in the conference

Akron coach J.D. Brookhart said. They shut us down a bit

but our run game managed to be somewhat productive in the fourth (quarter)

forcing (Marshall) to respect the run

giving Charlie more time and more options.

Two Akron players also garnered MAC East Player of the Week Awards thanks to their contribution to Friday's win.

Frye received the MAC East Offensive Player of the Week Award, and kicker Jason Swiger was named the Special Teams Player of the Week. Swiger sparked the Zips' tying drive with his fourth quarter onside kick, and kicked the game-winning 43-yard field goal.

Bowling Green to face OSU in first round

In the first round of the NCAA Division I women's soccer Tournament, Bowling Green will face Ohio State Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Ranked last of eight teams entering the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Falcons (10-11-2 overall, 8-5-2 MAC) prevailed, 2-0, against Central Michigan in the finals. The win gave Bowling Green its first MAC title and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Their opponents, No. 13 Ohio State (16-3-3), earned the sixth seed in the tournament and its second Big Ten title in three years with a 2-0 shutout of Penn State Sunday.

Wolfe tied atop NCAA scoring

Through nine games this season, Northern Illinois running back Garrett Wolfe is tied for the top spot in scoring in the nation.

Tied at 108 points with Texas running back Cedric Benson, Wolfe is the MAC's top rusher, scorer, and all-purpose runner with 1,247 yards this season.

This is a kid who sat out for two years

didn't get to play much and we had no idea how fast and how smart of a runner he truly was until this year

Northern Illinois coach Joe Novak said.

The Huskies also improved their overall ranking this week moving up to No. 22 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll from No. 25 in their debut last week.
