High waters might lower time for students' spring vacations

After three days off last week because of high waters, Nelsonville City School Superintendent Ted Bayat said he is not optimistic about the school district having a spring break.

It doesn't look good

guys Bayat said at yesterday's school board meeting. We're already at four days and the way it's raining tonight could make it five.

One of the four school days was called off because of electrical problems in the building.

Board member Gary Edwards said he was concerned that the school district took days off last week unnecessarily.

We've been here a long time

and we've never had any days off

Edwards said. You can't go north or south on (State Route) 33 but you can go north and south; you just have to be creative about it.

Edwards said he believes buses could find alternative routes to pick up students without having to go through water or take any risks.

Nelsonville school district has not called off school because of rain in more than 40 years, Edwards said.

When you live in (the areas that flood)

you just get used to it

Edwards said. There's no snow days in Minnesota.

Board member Tim Maiden agreed with Edwards, though he thinks the circumstances of last week were a little unusual, too.

I never remember us ever having a day for flooding

but it is the highest flood I can remember

Maiden said.

I bring this up once a year and now's a good time. We need to develop a plan B (for flood water)

Edwards said. We're the only school around that's never ever had a plan B.

Edwards' main concern is that winter has not yet arrived and snow days are almost a certainty for the district, he said.

I just don't want to see us put anyone at risk at the end of February because we burned off all our days

Edwards said.

The board passed a resolution to have the transportation and facilities department look into developing a plan for the district that would consist of alternative bus routes that could be used on days when the main roads are closed.
