Former Ohio University President Robert Glidden recently signed a three-year, $250,000 contract with OU's Board of Trustees to help raise funds for a new alumni center.
The Board of Trustees initiated the contract with Glidden, requesting his services as a fund-raiser, said Board of Trustees Secretary Alan Geiger. While costs are not final yet, numbers are expected to reach $14 million to $15 million for the alumni center, depending on what services they decide to add to the center.
Glidden will be coming to Athens on Jan. 17 and 18 to meet with Leonard Raley, vice president for university advancement, to discuss what resources Glidden will need to begin the fund-raising campaign, Geiger said.
In an e-mail message, Glidden said that his official position is president emeritus. He will be paid $83,333 per year and will begin his duties in March.
In addition to the fund-raising projects he will be working on for OU, Glidden said he is doing some consulting work for other universities and could continue to work on that
he said. I have been approached by several institutions about jobs that are full time and that therefore are not of interest to me.
The Board of Trustees informally proposed the contract to him in 2003, shortly after he announced his intention to retire, he said. It was formally introduced in writing last spring.
This contract is an alternative to the phased retirement plan he could have chosen, not in addition to it, Glidden said. I feel a loyalty to the university and its continuing advancement and I want to be supportive of
