Solich named Hula head coach

For one Saturday afternoon, all of college football will revolve around Ohio football coach Frank Solich.

Already slated to serve as an assistant coach for the Hula Bowl, Solich was promoted Wednesday to head coach for the East squad after Georgia coach Mark Richt, formerly the East's head coach, withdrew from the college all-star game.

Isn't that great? Ohio Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh asked. Nothing but good things have happened since coach Solich came to Ohio University.

The promotion from an assistant to the head coach should lead to more airtime for Solich, the Bobcats and OU, and could have an affect on recruits who are still wavering between Ohio and other schools. The National Signing Day for high school players is Feb. 2.

He's doing this in the middle of recruiting season specifically so he can help the university

Boeh said.

Richt, conversely, withdrew from the game because he had to fill two openings on his coaching staff.

The Hula Bowl will be broadcast live on ESPN from Maui's War Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
