Former Student Senate presidential candidate and current senate staff member Dominic Barbato was sentenced Monday for aggravated possession of drugs.
Barbato was arrested by Ohio University police officer Josh Durst for possessing psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He will receive treatment and intervention with Hector Flores and Associates. In addition, he will pay court costs.
Barbato ran for president of senate last year as a member of the K.E.G. party. He serves as the senate parliamentarian, a non-elected position.
He is the guide of the meeting with rules and procedures
Senate President Kristen Jensen said. His job is to be present at all the general and rules and procedures meetings and make sure the rules of order are followed.
The senate officers will not decide Barbato's future with the senate until an executive meeting Thursday afternoon. Senate Vice President Jen Price said Barbato was a competent worker.
My personal belief is it does not affect his position since he can do his job she said. Price also stressed that Barbato was senate staff and not an elected official.
Barbato's Athens number is unlisted, and he could not be reached for comment.
However, Price spoke in his defense. He is being very mature and accepting his punishment she said.
Price added that as a non-elected person his responsibilities were different. He doesn't take the oath of officers and executives
Price said. He doesn't actually represent anyone.
Price was uncertain if a senate staff member had been sentenced before during her tenure. To my knowledge it has never happened
but it may have been kept hush-hush because it is a personal matter
she said.
