Swimming news

The Ohio women's swimming and diving and men's and women's track and field teams had an unscheduled break from their respective competitions this weekend because of poor weather.

The women's swimming and diving team's home dual meet against Bowling Green was canceled. There has been no make-up date announced.

Coach Greg Werner said he and Bowling Green coach Keri Buff made the decision to cancel the meet because of the weather conditions in the morning and the worsening conditions expected for the afternoon.

Neither of us felt comfortable or confident to hold the meet because of the conditions outside

he said.

The Bowling Green team was already in Athens after competing against Marshall Friday night.

Werner said the canceled meet gave the team an opportunity to get in a good practice.

In place of the meet we had a vigorous practice Saturday he said. It allowed us to get a little more work in to prepare for the upcoming meets.

The Bobcat swim team returns to the pool 1 p.m. Saturday against the Thundering Herd at Huntington, W.Va.

Out of the pool and on to the track, 17 schools, including the Ohio track and field teams, were slated to compete at the Marietta College Open, but only eight teams participated due to weather in the region.

Coach Clay Calkins said the team had every intention of going to the meet until a level 3 snow emergency was called.

Better safe then sorry is always our motto

he said. We didn't want to risk the teams' safety by traveling in this weather.

Hurdler Jericka Duncan said the team recognized that this was a weekend off, but they could not sit back and relax.

Many of us on the team (went) to Ping to work out in preparation for next weekend's meet

she said.

The track and field teams will return action Jan. 28-29 at the Findlay Classic.
