OU women express little interest in plastic surgery

Despite the stereotype that breast implants are popular on college campuses, some Ohio University women said getting implants is not trendy.

Similar to many women, senior Liz Wing said she prayed to grow boobs when she was young. Wing's prayers eventually were answered, but while she was growing up, she thought implants would be nice. Now Wing would discourage anyone from getting them.

For the most part

I am against implants because it just perpetuates the stereotype that women need to be buxom Barbies OU senior Cari Armstrong said.

Plus they just look terribly fake. I'd rather wear a push-up bra and work with what God gave me.

Dr. Matthew Yoak, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon from Marietta, has been busy since he opened his private practice in January at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

One of the few plastic surgeons near Athens, Yoak said he does not perform many implants on college-aged women. Even so, breast augmentation remains his most-popular surgery.

Many college-aged women are not getting implants yet because their breasts still are growing, Wing said.

I'm sure people I know will get them in the future

she added.

The average breast augmentation patient is a well-educated mother in her 30s, according to a study by the Mentor Corporation.

Dr. Bryan Michelow said the ideal candidates for breast augmentation are women between the ages of 18 and 35. Michelow, an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Case Western Reserve University, receives a great deal of college-aged women at his practice in Lyndhurst, he said.

I only think women should get (breast implants) if they need reconstructive surgery

sophomore Alex Yates said. I just think women should be more comfortable with how they are without implants.
