Freshmen anxious about their first experiences away from home finally have somewhere to turn for answers to questions students might not find at a school's orientation.
The popular college haven Web site CollegeHumor.com released the results of itsinaugural Freshman Orientation Survey. The Web site surveyed students about their experiences as freshmen, from drinking to sex to skipping class.
The idea started as a pet project
said Streeter Seidell, the front-page editor of CollegeHumor. Inspired by an e-mail from a rising freshman, Seidell and the CollegeHumor crew created the survey to answer all of the questions that incoming freshmen really have.
You can go to your college catalogue and find out how late the library's open he said. But it doesn't really answer the 'real' questions.
The survey helps freshmen connect to one another through similarities in experiences and personalities because when you're an incoming freshman you pretty much don't know anything at all
Seidell said.
He added that concerns about getting laid could be a big issue, especially among men. But, according to the survey, 46 percent of incoming freshmen were virgins.
Many students ' especially freshmen ' can be peer pressured into drinking and drug usage: 44 percent of freshmen drank on their first night of college and 51 percent used marijuana their first year.The survey, however, doesn't focus strictly on partying activities. It also found girls were 50 percent more likely to not get along with their roommates than guys.
And don't fear the dreaded Freshman 15: girls gained an average of 5.44 pounds and guys gained an average of 5.94 pounds their first year of school.
Don't let the negative statistics deter you from enjoying your freshman year. Seidell said live it up the first year of school, but be sure not to party too hard or burn out.
