A local couple has filed suit against the county for at least $25,000 after a blocked sewer line filled their home with four inches of sewage in March.
The suit, filed by Gary and Paulette Williams of The Plains, claims the county was negligent in its upkeep of the lines around their three-unit apartment building. The Plains Water and Sewer District is responsible for the lines and is operated by the Athens County Commissioners office, according to the initial complaint.
The sewage flooded their building Mar. 24, but the sewer had backed up three times before and was not taken care of by the county, according to the complaint. The previous incidents were not as severe as the most recent, said Jim Sillery, attorney for the Williams.
County residents can file claims with the County Risk Sharing Authority, an agency that provides liability coverage for 61 Ohio counties, said Bill Theisen, Athens County commissioner.-
