Golf: Preparing for the Big East

The Ohio men's golf team placed 18th out of 20 teams yesterday at the Xavier Invitational, finishing ahead of Davidson College and Wright State University.

The Bobcats finished with a 28-over par score of 892 for the tournament, played at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. After posting a four-over par 292 in the first round of play, Ohio stumbled to the finish with a 301 in the second round and a 299 in the final round.

This team has a lot of ability; we're just not showing it right now

Ohio coach Bob Cooley said. I would like to see us improve as the tournament progresses and do better in the next two rounds.

Sophomore Tim Gusweiler, a Loveland native, played as an individual at the Invitational and shot an even-par 216. That score was a best among the Ohio golfers at the event and enough to earn him a tie for 32nd place overall.

It was definitely encouraging to see Tim play well Cooley said. It's always nice to get some home cooking and sleep in your own bed and that's why we brought Tim to the tournament to play individually.

Another sophomore, Stewart Jamieson, finished atop the Ohio team card with an eight-over par 224. The score put Jamieson in a tie for 72nd place and earned him his second straight tournament as the top player for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats have a long layoff before the Big East/Mid-American Conference challenge on Oct. 27 and 28. The golf team could use the extra time, according to their coach.

I definitely see it as a welcome break

Cooley said. It will give us time to sort of gather ourselves and just work on our individual games as much as possible.

Marquette University won the tournament, finishing with an overall score of 841. There were three MAC competitors at the Invitational besides Ohio. Akron finished seventh with a 23-under par 841. Bowling Green finished 10th with an overall score of 867 and Ball State finished 11th with an overall score of 869.
