While summer can be an exciting period of productivity or adventure, the summer before classes reopen can also be peaceful, restorative and worthwhile without being extra busy.
Despite recent victories in the industry when it comes to award committees recognizing people of color, it is important to acknowledge that there remains progress to be made when it comes to properly acknowledging Black creatives.
When it comes to remembering history, it’s most effective when we integrate history’s lessons into our lives rather than leaving them in the past. We must take action in the present in honor of the past rather than only remembering it.
As we consume historical media such as biopics and engage with history, we must engage with these things at a critical level to not romanticize or glorify history. Even though there is a divide between historical figures and us, we can learn to understand history in a more educational and less harmful way, and understand that history is more than the accomplishments of a few great men.
In the modern era, the phrase “carpe diem” or “seize the day” can be more worrying than inspiring, especially because of external pressures like social media. People need to understand the phrase in its original context to truly live out the phrase “carpe diem.”
