Since when do letters to the editor expressing one's opinion result in personal attacks of one's character? My name is Blake Loaiza, not to be confused with Blacke Loaiza, who I am observing has caused more controversy than Chris Yonker. As she was referred to in a recent letter to the editor by Gabe Forte, Miss Loaiza
as he uses in what appears to be a condescending manner, doesn't have to stay on the third floor, doesn't have to accept the scholarship, etc. Gabe, I don't know if you have heard of parents, but they are pretty keen on scholarships, whether you like them or not. Also, could it be that she was ill-advised on where she needed to be in the library? I'm sure she wouldn't write something if she didn't think it was the truth, fact of the matter being it is a required program for minority students receiving the KCP scholarship. This past weekend I decided to go home to Columbus to visit my family and they had read Blacke's letter to the editor and thought it was pretty good. Blacke's sister, a political science graduate of the distinguished Wellesley College for women ' now a doctor ' and her mother, who has her PhD in psychology, both agreed with Blacke. Whether the minorities of Ohio University like it or not, the basis of the program is that minorities come from low-income homes and neighborhoods and have poor study habits. Who can blame Ohio University? I wouldn't throw away a few grand on kids who can't study, either. So what is their solution? Make sure we do well; if you don't get a 2.75 GPA, you can kiss that money goodbye. The LINKS program does help and I am thankful for it, but let's not sugarcoat why it was put into place. Blacke was attempting to make a point about an article written by Chris Yonker that sent every minority on campus into a frenzy; we have bigger fish to fry, minorities. On a side-note, Blake and Blacke agree this letter is not as well written as the first because it is borderline defensive. 17
