Cross Country: Distance, terrain could give Ohio edge at Indiana meet

The cross country season is dwindling away. When the Bobcats head to Bloomington, Ind., tomorrow for the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals, it could be the last race of the season for some. Craig Leon hopes that is not the case for him.

My goal is to qualify for nationals G? that's kind of been my goal for two years

so it's kind of like two years of work for one race Leon said. We want to make sure this isn't the last race.

Leon said he thinks the hilly course, combined with the added two kilometers for this race, gives his team a little bit of an edge. The Bobcats train on the hilly campus in Athens every day.

For the tournament, the races are longer as well. The men, who usually run an 8-kilometer race, will run a 10-kilometer race. The women, who usually run a 5-kilometer event, will run 6 kilometers.

We're more of a distance team ' most of the guys benefit from the extra distance. Late in the race is when we really start catching guys so the extra real estate will benefit us

Brian King said.

It seems like the more adverse the conditions

the better our team responds

coach Clay Calkins said. I think it helped us out at the (Mid-American Conference) Championships and it could help us out at regionals.

Carime Reinhart, Kari Summers and Annie Beecham, the team's three first-team All-MAC selections, will lead the women tomorrow.-
