Engineering college announces faculty position changes

Ohio University faculty members at the Russ College of Engineering and Technology will be changing positions within the college, according to a news release.

Billy Galloway is the new interim chair of the Department of Aviation; David Bayless, the new Robe Leadership Director; and Michael Braasch, the permanent director of the Avionics Engineering Center.

The engineering college dean, Dennis Irwin, said Galloway's experience is an asset to the college in an Oct. 26 news release.

We are very fortunate to have gained his experience in both industry and also at Ohio University previously

he said.

With a master's degree in aviation from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University, Galloway has more than 10 years of experience in aviation instruction. He was a pilot for ExpressJet Airlines as well as Airnet Systems Inc. and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 to 1990.

He replaces Anthony Sharp, who took a position as director of aviation science at Elizabeth City State University. Galloway was also an assistant professor of aviation instruction at OU.

I could not be happier G? the position is giving me a whole new appreciation for the chairs I have worked with in the past said Galloway.

Bayless, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Ohio Coal Research Center, was named director of the Robe Leadership Institute, which cultivates young leaders within the college.

Bayless holds a doctorate degree from the University of Illinois, a master's degree in engineering management from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri at Rolla. He has also written more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of pollution control and energy conservation.

I am very excited about it and honored deeply honored

Bayless said. I hope to maintain the outstanding work of the Center as developed by Drs. Robe and Mitchell and I hope to expand its reach to more students in the Russ College by opening opportunities in public service and leadership.

Bayless will replace Jerrel Mitchell, an electrical engineering professor, in the fall of 2008.

Braasch, the Thomas Professor of Engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was named permanent director of the Avionics Engineering Center in the Russ College. He replaced Jim Rankin, who will become the engineering college's new associate dean for research, graduate studies, and planning this December once the permanent Vice President for Research is hired.

Braasch has served the department as an undergraduate intern, graduate intern, research engineer and faculty member.

This experience helps me to appreciate the perspectives of all of the researchers within the center

Braasch said.
