Ohio University dining hall markets pulled Jeno's brand Crisp 'n Tasty Pizza from the shelves Thursday after it was recalled for a possible E. coli contamination.
General Mills Operations recalled its frozen pizzas with pepperoni toppings after they were linked to an outbreak of 21 E. coli-related illnesses in 10 different states, according to a General Mills press release. The first case of illness was reported July 1, and an Oct. 10 illness is the most recent.
According to General Mills, the recall affects about 414,000 cases of frozen pizza. It includes both Jeno's and Totino's brand frozen pizzas, though OU carries only Jeno's. The affected Jeno's products are the Crisp 'n Tasty Supreme, Crisp 'n Tasty Pepperoni and Crisp 'n Tasty Combo.
General Mills received the possibly contaminated pepperoni from an outside supplier.
Students who bought one of the recalled products can return it to the market for a refund, said Emily Howard, marketingmanager for Auxiliary Services.
Howard said that OU Dining Services found out about the recall Thursday. A release was sent to the markets at Boyd, Nelson and Shively dining halls, which removed the affected products by Thursday night, she said.
According to an OU news release, General Mills has not found any E. coli in its Wellston, Ohio, plant, but a federal investigation is taking place.
This is just a precautionary measure
Howard said.
The Boyd, Nelson and Shively markets sold about 200 pizzas in the past two weeks, Howard said.
E. coli is a bacteria that can cause illness that is deadly in some cases.
If students do feel ill they should definitely go to their health care provider Howard said.
