Students looking to help out before the holiday season ' and clean out their food cupboards ' can do so by donating non-perishable food goods to several local causes.
The Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center has several drop spots where people can donate their food items. The Salvation Army, located at 1 Townsend Place off East State Street, collects food for the food center, which provides food assistance to those living in Athens, Hocking and Perry counties. Students can also go straight to the source and drop off items at the food center's office, located at 1005 C.I.C. Drive in Logan.
Tomorrow ' Ohio University's Reading Day ' groups of students will take to the streets to collect food for Good Works Inc., an organization that provides help for those struggling with poverty in rural Appalachia.
Lynn Walsh, an OU senior and the community assistant program coordinator for Off-Campus Living, said groups of students will go door-to-door in off-campus neighborhoods dropping off paper bags to fill with non-perishable food items. The teams will walk around starting at 1 p.m. dropping off the bags and will collect them around 6 p.m.
Not only will this off-campus food drive help those in need, but also students can compete for prizes. Walsh said the houses that donate the greatest number of items will receive gift certificates to the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce.
For students living in the residence halls, donating food might not be as simple as filling a bag to be picked up later. Barb Harrison, associate director for residence life, said the residence life department isn't holding a campus-wide program to collect food items. Various hall councils might hold individual drives, but nothing is confirmed.-
