Scripps' director in running for position at Nevada school

The director of Ohio University's nationally known journalism school will interview for another position next week, but cautions that he has not made a decision to leave his current post.

I don't want anybody to think I've made a decision to leave Scripps

said Tom Hodson, director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. I have not.

Last week, the University of Nevada at Reno selected Hodson as one of at least two finalists for its journalism dean position. The dean of its Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism died in January.

A 1970 OU alumnus and former chair of the university's Board of Trustees, Hodson became director of the Scripps school in July 2003. After earning a law degree from Ohio State University in 1973, Hodson worked in Athens County as a judge and trial lawyer.

Ohio University pays Hodson a $99,328 base salary, according to OU's salary book, last updated Nov. 14, 2006.

UNR's search committee contacted Hodson ' who has previously consulted for the university's National Center on Courts and Media ' after he was nominated for the position. The 15-year-old Reynolds school has 516 undergraduate students.Hodson said he does not know who nominated him for the position.

UNR's preliminary fall 2007 enrollment is 16,681 and the university's annual budget is about $560 million, said Zanny Marsh, the school's director of public relations.

UNR's interim dean said the Reynolds school wants a visionary dean.

The Reynolds school has a lot of resources said Rosemary McCarthy, interim dean of the Reynolds school. A new dean would be able to help us build our programs and our reputation.

Hodson said he met with UNR representatives Oct. 27 and will visit campus Nov. 14 to 16. Jerry Ceppos, a former Knight Ridder vice president for news, is the only other finalist for the position as of Thursday. McCarthy said she expects the search committee to select at least three finalists.

Several longtime university administrators have left OU this year.

Michael Mumper, former associate provost for graduate studies, left the university this year to become provost at his alma mater, Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.

Ralph Amos, assistant vice president for alumni relations since 1998, left OU in July. He now works for the University of California at Los Angeles.

Terry Hogan, who'd been with the university since he earned his bachelor's degree in radio-television communication in 1977, left this year to become vice president of student affairs at the university of Northern Iowa. He had been dean of students since 1998.

Hogan's brother, Tim Hogan, senior associate director of campus life, left OU Friday for Georgia State University. Bill Decatur, vice president for finance and administration, applied and then withdrew his application for the presidency of Florida Gulf Coast University this summer.
