Southeast Engine will return to Athens this weekend as part of the band's first national tour to promote its new album, A Wheel Within A Wheel. This concert will be one of two official CD release shows.
The album was released Oct. 16 through Misra Records, and the band has since been touring the East Coast and Midwest. Last night, Southeast Engine played its first CD release concert in Dayton.
While the band has consisted of a variety of Athens musicians, those currently on tour are Adam Remnant, Leo DeLuca, Adam Torres, Jesse Remnant and Gaelan Mullins. Tomorrow night's show will also feature special appearances by former members Michael Lachman, Matt Box and Josh Antonuccio.
The band formed in Athens in January 2000 playing small open mic gigs, but as it became more serious, the local fan base began to skyrocket
Adam Remnant said.
After opening for The Wrens in Athens last spring, Southeast Engine gained the attention of Misra Records executives, who approached the band about being signed. The independent label, which is located in Emeryville, Calif., helped the band to take its music to the next level.
The new album is louder and more guitar driven than the band's previous album, but still holds a softer side with the song Pursuit Of Happiness Pt. 2 which features a string quartet, Adam Remnant said.
A Wheel Within A Wheel is a biblical reference to the book of Ezekiel, detailing a man's journey toward spiritual awakening, but the album lyrics are not religiously driven. The title is a reflection of the album's cover, which was created before the band even began writing songs.
Although Misra Records has helped the local band get off its feet and manage a national tour, Southeast Engine is not living the glamorous life yet. The band loads its instruments into a 1995 GMC Rally van and drives to each city, hoping to win over new fans every night.
There is so much chance involved with being a newly signed band Adam Remnant said. We are not going to be an overnight success
but these small steps will lead to bigger things.
Southeast Engine plans to continue touring nationally through next year and will next return to Athens in January.
