Swimming & Diving: Fast freshmen contribute to Ohio's 2 wins

There was one word that could describe this past weekend for Ohio: dominance.

The Bobcats (4-0, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) defeated Akron (0-2, 0-1 MAC) and Buffalo (1-1, 0-1 MAC) at home by a combined total of 85 points. Ohio swimmers won 13 of 16 events against Akron and 10 of the first 12 events against Buffalo, which allowed for the team to grab quick and insurmountable leads.

Yeah

you can say that we won more than our fair share of events coach Greg Werner said. But I think that more than anything that they competed very well. They found a way to get on the wall first ' that's attributed to the ladies.

In both meets, the freshmen proved their worth by winning or competing well. Amanda Traylor won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle Friday against Akron. Amanda Cecere won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly against Akron and the 200-yard butterfly against Buffalo.

I'm pretty happy with (this weekend) because it's early in the season and I'm a freshman

Cecere said. I didn't really expect to come right into the program doing well.

I think that the freshmen did outstanding

said senior Emily Wylam, who won two events against Buffalo. We knew that they were going to help us out a lot all throughout the year

and they're really proving themselves. They're really showing it ' they mean business.

The freshmen added to the depth of the team, which resulted in its consistent performance.

We've had numerous performers achieve things up to this point ' and I'm not talking about just the first-place finishers

but in some cases

it could be the third- and the fifth-place (finishers)

Werner said. That tells me that we are being very consistent. We're earning it on a daily basis.

Buffalo sophomore Andrea Lehner gave Ohio a challenge in the meet on Saturday. In the 200-yard freestyle, Lehner barely beat senior Ilse Petersen, winning by one-tenth of a second. Wylam and Lehner raced later in the 200-yard backstroke, which Lehner won. Lehner also competed in the 200-yard medley relay and Buffalo's winning 800-yard freestyle relay team.

Overall, Werner was happy with his team's weekend.

I was really excited with the fact that in a lot of cases

we were better today than we were yesterday

he said.
