Weekend vandalism results in thousands of dollars in damage to cars on campus

A series of windshields smashed this weekend lead to thousands of dollars in damage to 14 cars parked on campus.

The Ohio University Police Department is investigating the destruction of car windshields with bricks on Friday and Saturday, Lt. Chris Johnson said. They are also looking into smashed windows at both Biddle and Nelson Halls that also occurred this weekend, he said.

Eight vehicles parked in the Nelson garage were hit with bricks this weekend, in addition to the vandalism of three cars parked in the South Green garage and one outside Biddle Hall, Johnson said.

A car parked in the Adams garage had $2,000 worth of damage inflicted, including both windshields smashed by a brick left in the back seat and a three-inch dent on the driver's door, according to the police report. No items were reported stolen.

Another car in Adams garage had received $750 worth of damage from a ripped soft-top roof and a broken windshield that had apparently been kicked in, according to the report.

Because the acts can be traced in a relatively direct progression on a campus map, it is possible that a single group is responsible, Johnson said.

Alcohol may also be involved simply because it was a holiday weekend, but too little is known yet without eyewitnesses to speculate any further, he added.

However, the Athens Police Department had not noticed any similar crimes over the weekend in the city.

We don't have anything like that (on record for the weekend)

so it must have been restricted to just the campus said APD Lt. Dave Williams.
