Wrestling: 'Cats place in Michigan

Ohio started its season Sunday at the Michigan State Open, placing sixth out of the 24 teams who were represented. Of those 24 teams, only a few sent their entire squads to participate.

We didn't take our full lineup

but it was a great experience for the guys we took coach Joel Greenlee said. We had six true freshmen place in the 20 and under (division) and that's a great accomplishment for those guys.

Wrestlers were split into two brackets; a freshman/sophomore (age 20 and under) bracket and an open division for the rest.

In the freshman/sophomore division, the Bobcats were led by Nick Purdue, Germane Lindsey and Tommy Weinkam, each of whom placed third in the 174-pound, 141-pound, and 157-pound weight classes, respectively.

Germane lost one match

and if he wrestled that match today

he'd win. Tommy really made up ground after his first-round loss

which was his first time wrestling in college. I think Nick grew a lot on the day

he had a couple close matches

which he won by one

and that's pretty impressive

Greenlee said in assessing his young wrestlers' performances.

Rounding out the six top finishers were Darrin Boing, who placed fourth at 133 pounds, Matt Reedy, who took fifth at 149 pounds, and Tim Samson, who took sixth in the 197-pound class.

The Bobcats did not send their entire squad to East Lansing, with Jake Frerichs, Jacob Ison, and Antione Love the notable wrestlers who did not participate this weekend.

We took a lot of young guys; we could have entered everybody except two guys in the 20 and under group

Greenlee said.

In the open division, Ohio had two wrestlers ' sophomores Clay Tucker and Kent Smith ' end with 2-2 records on the day.

The Bobcats' next event will be the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 24.
