Ohio kicks off its regular season this weekend by traveling to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Open. Joining Ohio this weekend will be fellow Mid-American Conference teams Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan, and as many as 30 teams are expected to be participating in the Open.
The Bobcats are coached by Joel Greenlee, who is headed into his 11th season at the helm of the program. Over those previous 10 seasons, Greenlee has a 116-79-4 overall record as well as a 29-21-1 record in MAC competition.
A young team, the Bobcats are returning three seniors from last year's squad and just one junior.
We have one tried-and-true tested guy at 157 (pounds)
and he needs to be a good leader for us this year and show guys the way Greenlee said, referring to the lone junior on the team, Jake Frerichs.
Frerichs, who won a wild-card berth to the NCAA Championships last season as a sophomore, will be participating in a tournament in Iowa this weekend separate from the team.
The coaching staff will be looking to a host of young wrestlers to be big-time contributors this season.
I think we've got a great group of young guys Greenlee said. The last time we saw a lot of these guys wrestle was in high school
so it'll be exciting to see them compete at the college level.
While the team is admittedly young, the Bobcats and their coach are confident in the ability of the underclassmen.
Some of these young guys are really going to have to step up and really do well
Greenlee said. Really up and down the lineup
we've got a lot of guys that we expect big things out of
so we're looking forward to it.
As for this weekend, Greenlee added, I'm just looking forward to finally wrestling; we've been practicing since the second week of September ' I'm ready to go wrestle somebody else.
