The difference between the visions of the future of Athens presented by the two candidates for mayor is striking.
I see the Athens of Baum's vision as more of the same: more big box stores, more large apartment complexes and the continued decline of our uptown businesses. Baum's comments on his desire to continue to develop large apartment complexes and his support and affection for University Estates shows he does not understand the very real impacts these large developments have on our sewer, water, fire and police. His overreliance on the idea of increased taxes from these types of developments is worrisome. Our city services will have declined and our high quality of life will suffer. I don't see any new ideas, no emphasis on the possibility of a better Athens. We will be just like any other place along a freeway. With Baum we will be stuck in the same old past.
I have confidence in Paul Wiehl's vision and understanding of what smart growth is all about. Throughout this campaign I have heard him make the very important connections that how our city grows influences what type of economic development we will be able to attract. Paul has talked about fostering the entrepreneurial spirit found in Athens to help grow jobs that are high-paying and sustainable. I also have confidence in Paul's understanding that how we grow also affects the quality and efficiency of our city services and environmental quality.
Paul has presented a vision of a brighter future. Under Paul's leadership, Athens can attain the potential that many people have been talking about for years. We can have a city that is growing and prospering, while at the same time protecting those things we love about Athens. Paul sees our distinctiveness as a key component in fostering a better future for Athens. Under Paul's leadership we will have sustainable economic development that builds on our assets and provides high-paying jobs for our young people. We will creatively deal with the problems that face our city, finding solutions that enhance our city today while preparing it for the challenges that lay ahead. I am going to vote for a brighter future for Athens. I am voting for Paul Wiehl Nov. 6.
