Living in one of the most prominent countries in the world, we must ask ourselves why our country cannot find the money or resources to invest in the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Republicans and Democrats must put party politics aside and work together to find a solution to this problem.
First, members of Congress must be in agreement on who will be covered by the bill and how the bill will be funded, before the bill is sent to the President. In the case that the President does veto the compromise bill, we must be sure that 2/3 of the House or Senate will be supportive enough to override the veto.
Second, while increasing tobacco taxes would pay for the bill without contributing to the national deficit, the President objects to this proposal. Perhaps, Congress could offer other solutions to pay for the bill, in addition to the increase in tobacco taxes.
Children's health care is of vital importance to our country's future, and our nation's leaders can surely devise a plan to pay for it. I call on our U.S. Senators and Representatives to put politics aside, and focus on the welfare of our nation's children.
