Your Turn: The new law director needs to protect student tenants' rights

Leaky faucets, holes in the walls and water dripping down from the ceiling ' What can we do?

Once you're out of the dorm, the dream of your own house can quickly turn into a nightmare. But what can you, as a tenant, do about it? In the front page Post article from Oct. 2, we found out that there was not much we could do when a local landlord is in charge of enforcing Athens City Code.

Garry Hunter is most certainly a jack of all trades

but is this in the best interests of student tenants and Athens residents? Hunter's properties have been in clear violation of code on multiple occasions, but that's okay because these infractions have been reported ' to his own office. Please look up conflict of interest in Webster's Dictionary and see if there is any way to avoid classifying Hunter's clashing responsibilities as anything but.

Hunter is also law director for Nelsonville and juggles a private practice. Four jobs? Quite a schedule. So how can we expect this man to devote the proper time to his position as Athens law director? Well, we surely cannot. It's not fair to him, but most importantly, it is not fair to the people of Athens.

Pat Lang seems to be the clear choice this year. Pat Lang has said that he will step down as assistant county prosecutor if elected. He is truly committed to bringing back the student tenants' rights. Lang will bring a focus to the position of law director that has been absent for over two decades. One man with one job ' seems like common sense to this voter.
