Your Turn: Winning cross country team deserves better news coverage

I picked up The Post Monday morning to see a front page spread devoted to the field hockey team. I read the article with pride in my fellow Lady Bobcats. I think it is incredible that they won the MAC tournament for the second year in a row.

The pride I felt for those ladies was quickly replaced with humiliation at the coverage, or lack thereof, that the women's cross country team received when they did the exact same thing a week earlier. The women's cross country team won their second consecutive MAC title Saturday, Oct. 27th. The Oct. 29th issue of The Post shoved the obligatory article to a tiny plot on the upper corner of page 7. The article did not even include a picture of the ladies winning their 10th MAC title, just some words strung together that hardly related the weight of our accomplishment.

In my second year at OU, I eagerly open the paper on Mondays after our big meets and I am always disappointed in the coverage we receive. While football, volleyball and field hockey continue to take up headlines, the cross-country team receives little recognition for our success. How many MAC titles will it take for us to get the respect we deserve?Annie Beecham is a sophomore journalism major.
