Battle of the Bricks: Ode to our rivals: A guided tour of Miami University

This is the first in a series of four staff columns leading up to Saturday's Battle of the Bricks men's basketball showdown in The Convo against arch rival Miami.

On Saturday our rival school comes to town, which means it is time for the first edition of the Hate Miami columns.

Wait, what?

You say you didn't know Miami was our rival? You have heard of them, but don't know much about them? Well, allow me to take you on a tour of Miami's campus, tradition and history to get you better acclimated.

Miami is a school full of tradition. For instance, you might want to stop by the residential quad before your next exam. There, you will find students at the base of a sundial rubbing their heads against brass turtles for good luck. Be careful, though, the turtles may be sticky from all the hair gel.

Next, we will take a trip over to the arch of Upham Hall. You might want to take that extra-special someone with you because legend has it, if you kiss her here, the two of you will get married. Actually, 16.3 percent of Miami grads end up getting married to each other, which is well above the average of 3 to 8 percent at other universities.

Then again, where else would rich, little Sally Trustfundington find someone as rich as her father to buy her things after daddy cuts off the credit card privileges?

After some lunch at the popular student hangout, Panera Bread, we will head to the myriad of fraternities and sororities on campus. If you don't want to be a part of Greek life, don't worry. You will be part of the less than 1 percent of other students on campus that choose to abstain.

Next on our stop will be Millet Hall, home to the Miami RedHawks basketball team. Here, you will instantly recognize Charlie Coles. The longtime coach and alum is most famous for his inspirational story, which was made into the 1989 box-office hit, Weekend at Bernie's.

Earlier, you may have noted that I said the Miami RedHawks, not Redskins. If you look closely enough at Pruitt Field, you can still the see the outlines of the Indian that was the school's mascot until 1997.-
