The Ohio swimming and diving team seemed to be smaller than usual last night, but that did not stop the 'Cats from continuing their hot streak when facing Marshall.
The Bobcats (9-1, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) did not lose a beat as they defeated Marshall 182-100, despite not having such contributors as junior Ashley Marion, senior Sigal Simsolo and sophomore diver Lindsay Hamilton. Some of these performers were out due to injuries, but coach Greg Werner knew that there were some scheduling problems.
There were a couple of tests that couldn't get rescheduled
Werner said. Even though we do have meets on Fridays there rarely are classes on Friday evenings. But Tuesday evening there are classes.
The Bobcats got key contributions from sophomore diver Ali Giordano, who swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events by margins of 24 points and 46 points, respectively, over teammate Jamie Acks. Giordano was sidelined earlier in the season because of injuries.
On the swimming side, junior Carine Vieira de Souza won the 200-yard freestyle and was the leading leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won the event.
Carine Souza had some great swims
Werner said. She made some improvements
and you like to see those sorts of things in a one-week turnaround.
Souza concurred.
I felt much better than I did last week
Souza said. I improved about 10 seconds from my best (200-yard freestyle) time.
Senior Molly Kravitz also impressed by setting a season best in the 200-yard breaststroke, breaking her old record by one second. This, she believes, can be contributed to the team's new training program.
The training this year is just different than last year
Kravitz said. I just feel like what I've been doing in practice is really helping me.
Werner said he is happy to see his team get hot in the latter part of the season, as the Bobcats have now won six meets in a row.
This time of the year
you want to see people get a little better and a little sharper
Werner said.
