Engineering donor's death signals the 'end of an era'

Dolores H. Russ, who along with her late husband are the namesake of Ohio University's Russ College of Engineering and Technology, died last week at her home in Naples, Fla., at age 86.

Working diligently to advance the field of engineering as a road to human improvement, Russ and her husband were major benefactors to engineering education at Wright State University, Cedarville University, and OU.

It's certainly the end of an era for the university and my college

said Dennis Irwin, dean of the engineering college. She and her husband Fritz were certainly the greatest friends the university could have.

Irwin added that she will live on in memory, especially through those who experienced opportunities that would otherwise have gone unrealized.

Born in Jackson County, Ohio, in 1921, Russ and her longtime husband ' an OU electrical engineering alumnus ' founded Systems Research Laboratories in 1955. Established in Beavercreek, Ohio, SRL specialized in electronics and high-technology, quickly expanding into one of the top electronics research firms in the U.S.

They also established the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize, an internationally competitive honor comparable to the Nobel Prize, which recognizes engineering achievements that advance the human condition.

Funeral services were held yesterday at Eisnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home in Jackson.
