Father, daughter among artists showcased at The Dairy Barn

For sculptor Winter Reiser, Athens Voices 2008 marks two firsts in her life ' the first time she will display work at The Dairy Barn and the first time she'll be in the same exhibit as her father.

I am very proud to be exhibiting with my dad

she said. Reiser's father, David, is the president of The Dairy Barn's Board of Trustees and will show stained glass in the exhibit.

Starting today, the Reisers will join 10 other artists in The Dairy Barn's second annual juried exhibition that features only local artists. Juried means that a panel selected the work from submissions.

It's a big part of our mission to serve local artists said Amy Doeringer, The Dairy Barn's exhibitions director.

Although some artists are related, the work was chosen based on their merits; the selection committee did not know the names of the artists during selection, so family members being featured together is coincidental, she said.

The exhibit features various forms of media, including painting, photography and ceramics. New to Athens Voices this year are stained glass, sculpture and puppetry.

A 25-foot-long sculpture ' a commemorative piece for those who have died in Iraq ' is one of the three pieces of Reiser's graduate thesis and her display.

A 2007 Ohio University graduate, Reiser now lives and works in Columbus. She grew up in Athens and said The Dairy Barn has always been a big part of her life.

The exhibit is like a nice homecoming she said.

For puppeteer Holly Cole, an OU associate professor of costume design, this also will be her first time showing work at The Dairy Barn. She has worked in costume design for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus and the Muppets.

She contributed one hand puppet and four animal headdresses to the exhibit. The headdresses are full-body costumes, similar to walk-around characters at theme parks or animal costumes for plays.

Athens Voices 2007 saw a great turnout for a winter exhibit, Doeringer said, adding that the staff is hoping that this year will be just as successful.
