Incumbent Athens County Prosecutor C. David Warren will face a challenger in the March 4 primary in Susan Gwinn, the Athens County Democratic Chair.
Warren, 54, also a Democrat, has held the county prosecutor position for the past eight years and said he has intended to run for another term for a while.
I still enjoy the job
said Warren, who was hired as assistant county prosecutor in 1982. I have the best job in the world because when I get up in the morning I really feel that I'll help at least one person that day.
Despite filing on the Jan. 4 deadline Gwinn 54
said she has also been considering running prior to the deadline. The lifelong Athens County resident has practiced law in Athens for over 25 years and ran for the county prosecutor position in 1984.
I had been thinking of running for quite some time, Gwinn said. I got everything signed Dec. 13 and was mulling it over.
Gwinn's candidacy does not improve party unity during a year in which Democrats must stick together, Warren said.
I think it's highly unusual that a party chair would run against a sitting member of their own party, he said.
If re-elected
Warren hopes to continue to expand the office's outreach programs
including those designed to help senior citizens protect themselves from identity theft
teach parents how to protect their kids from being solicited online and train law enforcement officers from Athens and other counties.
We've been recognized on at least four different occasions for being the best in the state. For a small county, it's just unheard of, said Warren. I'm hoping the people will take a look at what we've done over the past eight years.
In a Jan. 4 press release
Gwinn said she believes she is the best qualified candidate to provide Athens County with an even-handed justice system.
My greatest strength is my ability to look beyond the sensationalism of something and try to be fair and equitable to everyone, Gwinn wrote.
She said in the release that she hopes to discuss her plans for the position with the community in the coming weeks. She declined to expand on the statements made in the release.
I'd rather outline my goals at a later date, Gwinn said. I'd like to put it together in a more comprehensive way.
The winner of the Democratic primary could still face an independent candidate in the November election if any file by March 3.
