Students for a Democratic Society will propose a resolution to Student Senate calling for the resignation of both student trustees, should the Board of Trustees' proposed presidential evaluation policy pass.
The resolution, which will be presented during Student Speakout at tonight's Student Senate meeting, accuses the Presidential Evaluation Committee that proposed the new policy of ignoring the resolutions passed in Fall Quarter by Student Senate and Graduate Student Senate requesting more openness in the evaluation process.
Student trustees Lydia Gerthoffer and Tracy Kelly were both members of the committee that drafted the new policy. Kelly argued strongly in favor of requiring G
Kelly said in a written statement. That being said if the problem at hand is the Board's removal of a large portion of feedback from this process I am not convinced that encouraging the elimination of remaining constituent representation would be the best course of action.
Gerthoffer released a statement saying she would continue to pay attention to resolutions from the senates and welcomed feedback from all campus constituencies.
The SDS resolution also asks Ohio University President Roderick McDavis to speak out against the policy and reaffirms Student Senate's request for more openness in the evaluation process.
I'm upset they're essentially ignoring the fact that constituency groups need to have a say
said Will Klatt, founding member of SDS.
SDS began a petition yesterday to protest the proposed policy outside of Baker University Center; 125 students signed it. The group will present the petition to the Board of Trustees at its February meeting.
Under the new policy, an annual evaluation would consist of a self-assessment by the president and conversations among the president, the executive committee and the full board. Comprehensive reviews would occur the year prior to the final year of a president's contract and would require the input of constituent groups. Trustees would be allowed ' but not required ' to accept such input annually.
Last year, the board consulted six university constituent groups in what it called a 360-degree evaluation of the president. The belief of SDS is that this institution should be run democratically; the people who live and work in the institution should have the most say in the evaluation of the people who run it
Klatt said.
Although Student Senate announced its intention to draft its own resolution and to begin a form-letter campaign, SDS' campaign will be more effective, according to its news release.
Like a lot of their proposals
it doesn't really have any teeth
Klatt said.
