Dylan Scott | STAFF WRITERds783006@ohiou.eduA 4-7 team record in dual matches wasn't what Jacob Ison had in mind for Ohio at the start of this season.I'm not really impressed right now
the 165-pound sophomore said. We need to get back on track.
So, heading into the Virginia Duals tournament tomorrow, coach Joel Greenlee turned up the intensity in practice this week with hopes of toughening the Bobcats, losers of six straight dual matches, from both a physical and a mental standpoint.
Tougher practices are all about the little things, Greenlee said, such as maintaining a competitive mentality and performance for the entire two hours.
With a lot of these guys they've wrestled hard in practice their whole life but they could get by with just wrestling hard
he said. Now
you need to learn to wrestle a little bit harder today than you did yesterday
and a little bit harder tomorrow than you did today.
Despite some strong performances at times, such as a 22nd-place finish at the Southern Shuffle on Dec. 29, the team as a whole hasn't gelled since the season-opening Hoosier duals on Nov. 24. That's when Ohio snagged all four of its dual wins for the season.
Erik Schuth, a 184-pound freshman, said the tougher practices might be just what Ohio needed, especially from a mental standpoint. The team tended to get down and lose momentum if it lost the opening matches at dual meets.Obviously
he said, we needed to do something.
Ohio's youth has been no secret throughout the year. As those wrestlers continue to make the adjustment from high school to college, Schuth said the increased intensity is only going to help them as a unit.
We've got to turn it up in practice and train that much harder
he said. It makes us more confident in ourselves.
A noticeable change can be felt in the practice room, Ison said, and the wrestlers are taking it upon themselves to improve.
We're all just pushing ourselves harder than we did before
he said. You can see a big difference in the room. It's like the guys' morale is up now.
This is probably the best week of practice we've had all year long
said Greenlee, Guys wrestled hard. They're figuring it out.
