Flowers to leave Athens City Council for new job

Athens City Councilwoman Amy Flowers, D-At Large, announced yesterday she will not finish her latest elected term and will instead take a job as a bailiff in Columbus.

Flowers started working in Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Timothy S. Horton's court Jan. 28 but has yet to move to Columbus, she said. While she called the new job an exciting opportunity, she also said it was not in her long-term plans.

I had no intentions of leaving Athens this soon or even leaving at all

she said. Some things are just unpredictable.

Flowers told The Post's editorial board last fall that she was considering going to law school in Columbus but she intended to take night classes and finish out her term on council.

Flowers was originally elected in 2005 as an OU student and won a second term last fall. She was set to make $6,800 as a councilwoman in 2008.

Flowers said she will serve on council until her replacement is named.

A replacement will be selected by a vote of Democratic Central Committee members who live in Athens, said Susan Gwinn, the Athens County Democratic party chair, adding that she expected the process to be completed at the end of March. Any of the committee's 23 members living in the city can nominate someone for the spot, and a candidate must receive 51 percent of the votes to win. If no candidate receives 51 percent of the votes, the person receiving the lowest number of votes is taken out of consideration and committee members vote again.

Gwinn said she had not even begun to think about a potential replacement for Flowers.

Councilwoman Nancy Bain, D-3rd Ward, said she will miss Flowers' problem solving abilities and her attention to student concerns. She also said that while Flowers leaves this political arena, she will soon turn up in another.

Amy just did it; she wouldn't take no for an answer Bain said. I sure hate to see her go but I see her going pretty far in politics.
