Indie folk rock may have many trendy artists coming out of the woodwork these days, but the Indigo Girls have held down the sound since releasing their first album in 1982.
First meeting in elementary school in Georgia, Emily Sailers and Amy Ray started to play music together throughout high school and college, and officially became the Indigo Girls in 1985, according to the group's Web site.
The duo was signed by Epic Records in 1988 and won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Recording in 1990.
The band departed from Epic Records when their album count contract was fulfilled in 2005, and signed a new deal with Hollywood Records. Their first album with Hollywood Records was Despite Our Differences, released in 2006.
The Indigo Girls are also known as political activists, contributing with efforts to help the environment as well as women and gay rights. They are currently on tour with Kathleen Edwards and will be performing tonight at Templeton-Blackburn Memorial-
