Career Fair offers students free exposure, experience

Job-hungry students can circulate their résumés, chat with potential employers and fill out internship applications at today's Winter Career and Internship Fair.

The annual fair - coordinated by Ohio University's Office of Career Services - will feature about 75 employers, including Wells Fargo Financial, Cardinal Health, Verizon Wireless, KeyBank, Progressive Insurance and Target Corp.

Recruiters - many of whom are OU alumni - will have tables set up in Baker University Center Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. The employers will select promising candidates to interview between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The fair is open to all OU students and alumni, and no pre-registration is required. All majors are welcome, but majors related to business and engineering are in particularly high demand this year. Students are required to dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their résumés as well as their OU IDs.

Kristine Hoke, assistant director of Career Services, suggests that students research the companies that will be at the career fair before attending in order to gain familiarity with their potential future employers.

I think that it's really important for (students) to prepare and do some research in advance

learn about those companies that will be in attendance Hoke said. One of the biggest complaints we get from employers is (about) students not being prepared.

A list of employers attending the fair and a job search manual are available on the Career Services Web site. The job search manual includes sample résumés, sample thank-you letters and a guide to professional etiquette, as well as job interviewing techniques.

Hoke also stressed the importance of dressing professionally. Men and women are encouraged to wear dark suits and polished shoes, according to the Career Services Web site.

It's really important for students to represent Ohio University in a positive manner Hoke said.
